Spring is almost here and it’s time to start using the garden benches, tables and chairs again.   You may store your outdoor furniture inside during the winter months or leave it out in the cold.  Either way it can get dirty over time, especially when exposed to the elements.  The most effective way to clean your outdoor furniture is with a high pressure washer.

Power wash your garden furniture

When it comes to cleaning outdoor patio furniture, a pressure washer is an effective and efficient tool.  However, the procedure for cleaning your patio furniture will vary slightly depending on the furniture’s material. Your furniture could be made from metal or wood, with each entailing a slightly different cleaning approach.  There are cushions that you’ll have to clean as well.  For wood furniture, start by using a soft-bristled brush.

Prepare your furniture

Remove any loose debris and dust from your furniture with a broom or a brush.  If there are any cushions or removable covers, take them off and set them aside.

Choose the right pressure setting

High pressure washers come with adjustable pressure settings.  For outdoor furniture we recommend a lower pressure setting.  Delicate materials like wicker or painted surfaces will require a lower pressure setting of 50-100 bar, while tough surfaces like concrete or metal can handle a higher pressure setting of 100-150 bar.

Fill up your detergent bottle

Fill up your foam sprayer with cleaning solution.  Depending what material, you are cleaning we recommend a specialized detergent such as Rattan & Plastic cleaner or Stone & Wood cleaner. Most pressure washers come with an external foam sprayer meaning if you don’t use all the detergent at once, you can save it for next time.

Start cleaning

Begin cleaning your furniture starting from the top and working your way down.  Hold the jet washer at a distance of around 10 inches from the surface and spray in a sweeping motion.  Make sure to keep the lance constantly moving to avoid damaging the surface.

Rinse your furniture

After you have cleaned the entire surface, rinse the furniture thoroughly with plain water.  This will remove any remaining cleaning solution and prevent streaking.

Air dry furniture

Leave the furniture to air dry in the sun.  Avoid using a cloth or a towel to dry it, as this can leave lint or streaks on the surface.

Cleaning your garden furniture

Cleaning your garden furniture with a high pressure washer is an easy and effective way to keep it looking as good as new.  Wooden garden patios come in two varieties: softwood and hardwood.  Softwood is more prone to damage from a pressure washer, so using the lowest setting possible when cleaning these surfaces is important.  On the other hand, hardwood is much more resilient and can usually handle higher pressure settings.  To ensure that your wooden patio remains undamaged while being cleaned, it is important to adjust the pressure settings; accordingly, use a low setting for softwoods and a higher one for hardwoods. By following these steps, you can ensure that your furniture is clean and ready to enjoy all through the summer season.
